Hard work and a touch of magic define the spectacular partnership between
Hazel - the alchemist, and Clare - the unwavering enabler.
Hazel first recognized the power of coffee as a child in the Philippines. She would watch her grandmother roast beans—hand-picked by her family, dried on the sun-soaked patio. The intimate relationship between local farmers and coffee, the sounds of beans tossed in the wok, the smokey transformation from green to perfectly roasted, never left Hazel.
Years later, Hazel rekindled this personal relationship with coffee as she and Clare led the vanguard of Australian specialty coffee.
The beginning
of a cult
Fearlessly modifying espresso machines, and pushing grinders to their limits, Clare and Hazel had to do it all. Among the earliest importers of specialty beans to Australia, they brought a new vision of coffee to Sydney. A journey that originated in a home kitchen made way to its very own roastery – Coffee Alchemy.
Grinding freshly roasted beans for each order, Coffee Alchemy witnessed fans lining up outside the tiny café in Marrickville to following their nose to the iconic Strand Arcade. It quickly became clear that their unrelenting focus on transcendent coffee garnered some true devotees.

with accolades
As Coffee Alchemy developed a cult following for their coffee, the hard work and pursuit for perfection paved the way for Hazel to showcase her barista skills at the international level. This, in turn, was followed by various awards and recognition.
She has claimed multiple New South Wales Barista Championship titles, earning the 2005 Australian Barista Championship and 2006 Australian Cup Tasting Championship and representing Australia at both the World Barista Championship and the World Cup Tasting Championship.
The Sydney Morning Herald's prestigious Good Food Guide proclaimed ‘Coffee Alchemy’ the Best Coffee in Sydney years on end. Having risen to the pinnacle of the hyper-competitive Australian coffee scene, we decided to go international!

To New York, with Gumption!
Delivering daily superpowers to our customers, we started a roastery in Brooklyn in 2018. In less than a year, we’ve added ‘Gumption’ to Times Square, New York.
